What is microneedling?

Derm by Erica specializes in microneedling for melanated skin in the Los Angeles, California area.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling uses small needles to create micro-tears in the skin to promote natural healing. Once the tears are in place, serums can be added to promote healing.

Microneedling helps with issues like acne, dark spots, pores, sun damage, fine lines, and wrinkles. Microneedling is one of the few non-surgical treatments for scar revision. We use microneedling for scars from plastic surgery including BBLs, liposuction, tummy tucks, breast augmentation, acne scars, and C-sections.

There are a few different microneedling products approved by the FDA, but all have small and thin needles. Some only penetrate the first layer of skin, other go into deeper layers of the skin for more severe issues. The depth depends on what you're hoping to treat. The device is usually shaped like a large pen.

Is microneedling painful?

Microneedling at Derm by Erica is not painful. Your skin is numbed (we use topical lidocaine) and you will feel little to no pain. Some patients describe it as a prickly feeling.

We've had clients tell us microneedling elsewhere has been painful and included swelling or bruising.

What is the process for microneedling?

The process varies from person to person (and the need), but in general, the process includes:

  • Double cleanse
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Enzyme
  • Numbing
  • Microneedling with infusions
  • Masks
  • Radio frequencies

Is there a recovery period?

Do not sweat (ie working out) or have major sun exposure within 24 hours of your procedure. Do not wash your face the same day.

The results are visible within 1-3 days. Sometimes, there is some redness for a few days.
